Agentic Payments: Transforming the Shopping Experience with AI
Agentic Payments is set to revolutionise shopping by integrating artificial intelligence into the purchasing process, thanks to the collaboration between Razorpay and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Launched during the India AI Impact Summit, this innovative platform is currently being tested by a select group of users.
How Agentic Payments Works
Through this offering, users can conveniently order food, groceries, and essentials from popular platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto without having to leave their chat interface. AI assistants are reshaping the way individuals discover and evaluate products, and this platform, powered by Claude, embeds payment functionalities directly into users’ interactions. Consequently, transactions can be completed securely within the conversation.
The Collaboration Behind Agentic Payments
The partnership merges Razorpay’s Agentic Payments with NPCI’s UPI infrastructure, complemented by Claude’s conversational capabilities, to create a pioneering model of AI-native commerce. Supported by UPI Reserve Pay, users are allowed to set a single spending limit for merchants, enabling them to make multiple secure transactions without needing to re-enter their PIN, all while having complete control through real-time visibility, adjustable limits, and immediate consent withdrawal.
Example of Seamless Ordering
For instance, if a user feels like having a mid-afternoon snack, they can simply tell Claude, “I am craving a mid-evening samosa and chai. Can you order this for me and my team from my favourite restaurant near my office?” The AI agent will then assess what options are available on Zomato, present them to the user, and with just a single confirmation, place the order using Razorpay’s UPI-enabled Agentic Payments through Reserve Pay.
The Future of Agent-Led Commerce in India
Given India’s prevalent digital habits, particularly in the food and grocery sectors, this scenario creates the perfect setting for agent-led commerce to grow swiftly and responsibly. Together, these elements position India as one of the few countries globally where AI, payments, and consumer trust align on a large scale, making agentic commerce a tangible reality.
