Google and Reliance Collaborate to Provide AI Pro Subscription for Jio Users
Google has formed a partnership with Reliance to introduce its AI Pro subscription at no cost for Jio Unlimited 5G users for the initial 18 months. The rollout will begin with users aged 18 to 25, with intentions to broaden the eligibility to all Jio customers throughout India.
Features of the AI Pro Subscription
As part of this collaboration, qualifying Jio users will gain access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model via the Gemini app. Users will also benefit from advanced tools for image and video generation, powered by technologies such as Nano Banana and Veo 3.1. Furthermore, there will be extended access to NotebookLM for academic and research purposes. In addition, users will receive 2 TB of cloud storage that encompasses Google Photos, Gmail, Drive, and backup options for WhatsApp on Android devices.
Value of the Offer
According to Google, the comprehensive benefits of this subscription are estimated to be around Rs 35,100 per user. The subscription can be activated through the MyJio app, initially targeting users between the ages of 18 and 25 before it expands to a wider audience.
Background of the Partnership
This collaboration follows Reliance’s announcement of establishing its own AI unit in conjunction with Google and Meta. This new initiative is dedicated to developing and integrating fundamental AI technologies, with the trio working collaboratively on model creation, computing infrastructure, and large-scale deployment throughout Reliance’s digital ecosystem.
Recent Developments in the Telecom Sector
In July, Airtel unveiled a partnership with Perplexity to offer a 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription free of charge to its 360 million subscribers. Recently, OpenAI declared that it will make ChatGPT Go available for free to all users in India starting November 4. This indicates a growing competition among telecom operators to integrate AI features within their service bundles.
