Astrohaus Unveils a Writer’s Dream Mechanical Keyboard

Astrohaus has established a unique niche in the market. This Michigan-based startup designs hardware tailored for writers aiming to eliminate distractions. Completing a novel can be quite challenging when social media platforms like Instagram are just a click away.

While the company has gained recognition for resisting many technology trends, its latest product aligns with a growing movement. Revealed at CES 2025, the Wordrunner embraces the surge in mechanical keyboards while remaining committed to Astrohaus’ mission of promoting distraction-free writing.

The Freewrite Wordrunner essentially functions as a conventional mechanical keyboard but includes several features specifically designed for writers. Notably, it features a Wordometer (word count tracker) and a “sprint timer” to help writers work more efficiently.

The concept is to integrate productivity tools directly into the keyboard itself. Astrohaus aims to provide an opportunity for writers to bypass standard writing applications and concentrate on the act of writing itself.

“Writers utilise keyboards more than almost anyone else, yet they have never had access to professional-grade tools designed specifically for them,” explains founder and CEO Adam Leeb. “While the gaming industry has developed a plethora of specialised features for gamers, writers have been left with general-purpose keyboards and additional software to monitor their work. Wordrunner alters this dynamic by making the keyboard an active participant in the writing process — it becomes more than just an input device; it evolves into a true writing companion.”

The keyboard boasts an aluminium frame, featuring floating keys and a distinctive red control knob. The system is set to launch on Kickstarter in February, with anticipated shipping planned for late 2025.
