Kuku Technologies’ Revenue Surge in FY26 – A New Era in Content Production

Kuku Technologies’ Revenue Surge in FY26

In FY26, Kuku Technologies, the parent of audio and video platform Kuku FM, saw its operating revenue increase over six times, bolstered by significant marketing and advertising expenditures of Rs 1,105 crore. The company also achieved profitability, registering a profit before tax of Rs 88.6 crore.

Kuku Technologies’ Financial Growth

Kuku Technologies’ revenue from operations climbed to Rs 1,484.2 crore in FY26, up from Rs 241.5 crore in FY25, as outlined in its financial filings to the Registrar of Companies (RoC). Kuku FM provides a variety of audio content including business, self-help, personal finance, history, religion, entertainment, and fitness. Additionally, the company manages Kuku TV, Guru, and StoRizz, which deliver audio and video content primarily through subscription models.

Sources of Revenue

Subscription revenue formed the bulk of Kuku’s income, amounting to Rs 1,475.4 crore, representing over 99% of total operating revenue in FY26. The firm also generated Rs 6.86 crore from a pay-per-piece model, where users buy coins to access content, while advertising revenue reached Rs 1.9 crore.

Non-operating income, including interest from bank deposits, contributed Rs 26.2 crore, bringing the overall income to Rs 1,510.4 crore for the fiscal year ending in March 2026.

Content Production and Expansion

The remarkable growth coincided with the scaling of Kuku TV, a microdrama platform introduced in 2024. Kuku now produces over 150 microdramas each month, expanding its content portfolio significantly.

Expenditure Analysis

Marketing and advertising emerged as Kuku’s highest cost at Rs 1,105 crore for FY26, nearly quadrupling from Rs 284.8 crore in the prior fiscal year. Employee benefit expenses grew by 24% to Rs 74.1 crore, including Rs 18.5 crore attributed to ESOP costs. IT expenses more than doubled to Rs 56.7 crore, while operational costs climbed to Rs 96.25 crore from Rs 8.65 crore. Payment gateway fees reached Rs 43.2 crore. In total, Kuku’s expenses soared 3.5 times to Rs 1,421.7 crore in FY26, compared to Rs 411 crore in FY25.

Kuku’s Profitability Journey

The increased marketing investment facilitated substantial revenue growth, allowing Kuku to manage rising costs and achieve a net profit of Rs 182.7 crore in FY26, following a loss of Rs 152.6 crore in FY25. Profit before tax amounted to Rs 88.6 crore, while a deferred tax benefit of Rs 98.1 crore enhanced its overall profit.

EBITDA reached Rs 82.9 crore, yielding a margin of 5.6%, contrasting with an EBITDA loss of Rs 159.8 crore in FY25. Kuku’s cash and bank balance grew 2.5 times to Rs 293 crore by the close of FY26, with current assets increasing to Rs 746 crore.

Future Plans and AI Integration

As Kuku prepares for its planned Rs 3,500 crore IPO, it is establishing a 1,000-member AI-driven content production unit aimed at expanding its microdrama operations. The firm intends to integrate AI across various aspects of content creation, including writing, production, post-production, dubbing, and localisation, to boost content output while minimising production costs. Currently, 60-70% of its content utilises AI tools at various production stages. Kuku allocates over Rs 200 crore annually for content creation and collaborates with an extensive creator network of approximately 50,000 individuals.

Challenges Ahead for Kuku

Kuku’s next phase hinges on the sustainability of its microdrama initiatives beyond an initial increase in demand. Factors that may impede progress include the high costs associated with producing new, short-form content, the challenge of retaining subscribers amidst low switching costs, and the need to maintain viewer engagement in the face of abundant competing content. The company’s commitment to AI-led production may enhance economic efficiency, but scaling output without compromising content quality will remain a critical challenge as Kuku aims to grow its content offerings.
