Airbound Secures $37 Million Series A Funding for Innovative Aerospace Solutions
Bengaluru-based aerospace startup Airbound has successfully raised $37 million in a Series A funding round led by Greenoaks, with contributions from DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures. This latest funding injection brings Airbound’s total financing to nearly $50 million since its inception in 2023. The company intends to utilise this new capital to boost engineering efforts, initiate commercial-scale manufacturing, and enhance their market entry strategies.
About Airbound’s Vision
Founded by Naman Pushp, Airbound focuses on creating lightweight autonomous aircraft that are intended to transport both individuals and goods at a significantly lower cost compared to traditional aircraft solutions. The startup emphasizes that its aircraft can accommodate a single passenger or approximately 100 kg of cargo while drastically reducing the necessary aircraft weight to handle the payload. This approach aims to improve the economics of air transportation and achieve commercial viability for autonomous aerial delivery.
Innovating Air Transportation
The founder and CEO of Airbound, Naman Pushp, articulated the company’s vision by stating that enhanced physics leads to improved economics, thereby making it possible to move people and goods at a fraction of the current costs. Airbound has completed over 1,000 autonomous flights in collaboration with Narayana Health, transporting diagnostic samples efficiently between healthcare facilities and reducing delivery times from hours to mere minutes.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans
Along with the recent funding, Airbound has entered into a commercial deployment agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government, aiming to create an autonomous drone delivery network linking three cities. The plan includes scaling this network to facilitate 10,000 daily flights, catering to sectors like retail, ecommerce, and healthcare. Furthermore, Airbound anticipates that the Andhra Pradesh initiative will serve as a model for expanding aerial delivery systems throughout India.
Long-Term Ambitions in Air Travel
Airbound’s ambitions extend beyond logistics, with long-term goals that incorporate passenger transportation. The aim is to eventually employ its aircraft for intercity travel, potentially covering distances of up to 300 km in around 20 minutes. The startup is optimistic that advancements in aircraft design, autonomy, and materials science will significantly reduce air transportation costs and broaden the application of autonomous aircraft beyond just conventional drone delivery.
