Unified Payments Interface transactions in August 2025 reached impressive levels, driven by sectors such as debt collections, groceries, fuel, and utility payments, with multiple merchant categories surpassing Rs 5,000 crore in transaction value.

Leading Sectors in UPI Transactions

Data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) revealed that debt collection agencies were at the forefront, achieving transactions valued at Rs 77,007 crore. This was followed by securities brokers and dealers, which recorded Rs 45,687 crore during August.

Consumer Spending Trends

In terms of consumer expenditure, groceries and supermarkets accounted for Rs 68,116 crore through 3.1 billion transactions, while service stations, including fuel pumps, generated Rs 34,547 crore. The dining sector also saw robust activity, with restaurants recording Rs 19,432 crore, and fast food outlets including quick service restaurants (QSR) contributing Rs 14,542 crore.

Utility and Essential Services

Essential services maintained a consistent pattern of digital transactions, with telecommunication services totalling Rs 21,218 crore. Additionally, utility payments for services such as electricity, gas, water, and sanitation resulted in Rs 22,368 crore.

Discretionary Spending Insights

In discretionary spending, drug stores and pharmacies posted Rs 12,581 crore, whereas clothing shops for men and women reported Rs 11,811 crore and electronics shops achieved Rs 10,209 crore. Government services also surpassed the Rs 10,000 crore benchmark.

Decline in Digital Gaming Expenditure

This August noted a significant decline in spending on digital games. The sector registered 271 million transactions worth Rs 7,441 crore, a drop from July’s 351 million transactions valuing Rs 10,076 crore. This decline has been attributed to the prohibition of real money gaming applications implemented in the latter half of the month.

Other Significant Categories

Other sectors exceeding the Rs 5,000 crore mark included online marketplaces with transactions amounting to Rs 7,822 crore and liquor stores reaching Rs 6,116 crore.
