Bakingo: Growth in India’s Online Bakery Market

Bakingo is at the forefront of transformation in India’s online bakery market, which has expanded from conventional birthday cakes to include personalised desserts, high-quality baked goods and swift delivery options that align with modern celebrations and gifting trends. This bakery has managed to secure revenues exceeding Rs 400 crore in FY26, however, rising operational costs have resulted in heightened losses, which have doubled to Rs 37 crore over the last fiscal year.

Revenue Growth of Bakingo

In FY26, Bakingo’s revenue from operations saw a remarkable increase of 35% year-on-year, reaching Rs 405.8 crore compared to Rs 300.3 crore in FY25, as per its consolidated financial reports from the Registrar of Companies.

Background of Bakingo

Established in 2016 by Himanshu Chawla, Shrey Sehgal and Suman Patra, Bakingo specialises in online bakery services that include a variety of cakes and desserts such as cheesecakes, gourmet cakes, and jar cakes. The company operates in more than 30 cities and is supported by a network of over 100 kitchens, offering a selection of more than 100 products. Sales from these bakery offerings were the sole revenue source for the firm in FY26.

Financial Performance

Bakingo also reported an income of Rs 7.3 crore from investments and fixed deposits, bringing its total income to Rs 413.65 crore in FY26. However, the costs associated with raw material sourcing for cakes and desserts remained the highest expense for the company, comprising over 43% of total spending. This expense surged by 40% year-on-year to Rs 194.45 crore in FY26, up from Rs 138.7 crore in the previous year.

Rising Operational Expenses

Employee benefits expenses increased by 40% to Rs 31.6 crore, while advertising expenditures rose by 35% to Rs 75.4 crore. Additionally, commission and platform fees climbed over 39% to Rs 53 crore. Other operational costs, such as delivery, outsourced support, and fuel, further contributed to the overall expenditure.

Overall Expense Heightened

Bakingo’s total expenses escalated by 38.7%, reaching Rs 450.5 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2026, up from Rs 324.7 crore in FY25. Despite achieving a 35% revenue growth in FY26, the company faced pressure on its bottom line as operating costs climbed more rapidly, resulting in losses surpassing Rs 36.9 crore.

Current Financial Metrics

Bakingo’s Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) and Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation (EBITDA) margin reported at -39% and -7.48% respectively. On a unit basis, the bakery firm spent Rs 1.11 to generate a single rupee of operating revenue in FY26. Its total current assets were valued at Rs 86 crore, which included a cash and bank balance of Rs 30 crore during the most recent fiscal year.

Funding and Valuation Insights

Bakingo has successfully raised $26.5 million to date across two funding rounds, which includes a Rs 100 crore ($10.5 million) funding round in August this year, spearheaded by existing investor Faering Capital, at a valuation of $173 million, as reported by Startup Superb. Comparing this to the valuation of Theobroma, which was acquired for nearly Rs 2600 crore in FY 24-25 while also generating revenues similar to Bakingo in FY26, highlights a significant valuation gap.

Market Position and Competition

The substantial differences in brand positioning, with Bakingo catering to a broader audience than Theobroma, pose challenges in achieving required profit margins that meet investors’ expectations. Observers indicate that Bakingo faces a challenging road ahead in a market segment that lacks substantial barriers to entry, necessitating thorough consideration of future strategies.
