India Set to Surpass 900 Million Internet Users by 2025, Driven by Rural Growth

India’s digital transformation is accelerating rapidly, with projections indicating that the country will exceed 900 million internet users by 2025. A key contributor to this growth is rural India, which is currently experiencing a growth rate that is twice that of urban areas. With 488 million internet users residing in rural regions—compared to urban India’s 397 million—the future of digital consumption is increasingly emerging outside metropolitan hubs.

According to the recent Internet in India 2024 report by Kantar, a marketing data and analytics firm, along with the Internet and Mobile Association of India, the total number of active internet users in the country has reached 886 million. Rural internet penetration has surged, significantly closing the gap between urban and rural access. This shift can be attributed to several factors:

– Enhanced smartphone affordability
– Lower data plan costs
– Government-led digital initiatives

The states demonstrating the highest internet penetration rates include:

– Kerala (72%)
– Goa (71%)
– Maharashtra (70%)

In contrast, Bihar (43%), Uttar Pradesh (46%), and Jharkhand (50%) are lagging behind.

On average, internet users in India spend 90 minutes online each day. The primary online activities include:

– Social media
– OTT video and music streaming
– Digital payments
– Ecommerce

While urban users tend to engage more in financial transactions, rural users show a stronger preference for entertainment and communication, as highlighted in the report. Notably, a substantial 57% of internet users express a preference for accessing content in Indic languages, marking a shift away from platforms dominated by English. Additionally, the use of voice-based interactions is growing, with 140 million Indians utilizing voice search and AI-powered assistants.

Linear television is gradually losing prominence, as 286 million Indians—approximately a quarter of all internet users—now exclusively consume content through digital channels. The rapid uptake of connected TVs and smart devices is transforming India’s entertainment landscape.

Simultaneously, the landscape of digital commerce continues to adapt. Although online shopping remains robust, social media-driven ecommerce has slowed, reflecting evolving consumer trends. Notably, cash-on-delivery (COD) is experiencing a revival, with 105 million users opting for COD instead of digital payment methods—especially prevalent in rural communities and among female users.

Despite the significant increase in internet usage, 41% of India’s population—around 630 million people—remains offline. The principal challenges hampering internet access include:

– Lack of awareness
– Affordability issues
– Limited local-language content

While mobile penetration is on the rise, many rural users continue to depend on shared devices, underscoring the necessity for enhanced digital inclusion initiatives.
