InRisk Labs Secures $27 Million Series A Funding for Reinsurance Innovations
InRisk Labs, a technology-driven risk and reinsurance platform, has successfully secured $27 million in a Series A funding round. This round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Northpoint Capital. This funding arrives concurrently with a significant regulatory achievement for the business. The company’s subsidiary, EarthRe Insurance IFSC Limited, has obtained a licence from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to function as a reinsurer. It was noted that EarthRe stands out as the first incorporated reinsurer to acquire a licence from the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at GIFT City.
Utilising Fresh Capital for Growth
The newly acquired funds will be utilised to enhance underwriting, actuarial processes, catastrophe modelling, and AI capabilities. The aim is also to broaden operations into areas of natural catastrophe and climate risk, along with other non-life sectors such as marine cargo and motor. Additionally, the company plans to develop parametric and structured reinsurance offerings and fulfil regulatory capital requirements needed to scale EarthRe’s activities in India’s $10 billion reinsurance industry.
Transition to an Integrated Reinsurance Group
According to the company, this licence signifies a pivotal shift from a technology-driven insurtech platform to a comprehensive reinsurance group with licensed risk-bearing capacity. While InRisk Labs continues to enhance technology, data, and risk intelligence infrastructure, EarthRe will focus on underwriting reinsurance business using its regulated financial standing.
EarthRe’s Focus Areas in Non-Life Reinsurance
EarthRe is concentrating on non-life reinsurance, encompassing areas like natural catastrophe, climate risk, property, crop, and specialised lines. The company has stated that its platform merges climate, geospatial, satellite, exposure, and claims data to better underwriting, pricing, portfolio building, and capital distribution. Furthermore, it intends to provide treaty, facultative, structured, and parametric reinsurance solutions tailored for India and other Global South markets.
Market Outlook and Strategic Vision
Malay Kumar Poddar, chief executive officer of EarthRe, expressed that India is poised to become the most significant insurance market in the next twenty years. To enable sustainable growth, it is crucial to develop indigenous capabilities and customised solutions specifically designed for the Indian market. Vishal Gupta, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, stated that the firm has supported the company since its inception and has reaffirmed its commitment by increasing its investment. Similarly, Sameer Brij Verma, founder and CIO of Northpoint Capital, highlighted that EarthRe skillfully combines a licensed balance sheet with an AI-driven risk platform and in-depth underwriting knowledge.
