The firm, which emerged from the edtech sector, has recently acquired Onea Care, a recruitment agency specialising in healthcare in Germany. This strategic move aims to facilitate job opportunities for Indian nurses in Germany, which is the largest economy in Europe.

Initial Focus on Healthcare Sector

In January, Kumar articulated that the primary focus for BorderPlus will be the healthcare industry in Germany. However, the long-term vision includes expansion into other sectors such as hospitality, retail, education, construction, logistics, and trucking. Future plans for BorderPlus also entail exploring additional geographical markets to broaden its reach.

Commitment to Quality Job Opportunities

Upon announcing the acquisition of Onea Care, the co-founders expressed their commitment to providing Indian nurses and healthcare professionals with fair, structured, and quality job opportunities in Germany. They stated, “We are dedicated to exploring opportunities in key markets that will not only expand our operational presence but also empower Indian skilled healthcare talent in pursuing international careers.”

Details of the Acquisition and Funding

The statement released by BorderPlus did not disclose specific details regarding the acquisition or its financial terms. Earlier in January, Kumar indicated that strategy partnerships and potential mergers and acquisitions (M&A) would be key components in reinforcing their international presence. He emphasized that if suitable acquisition opportunities arise, BorderPlus would consider self-funding these initiatives.

Funding and Growth Plans

The startup recently secured $7 million in a funding round led by Owl Ventures, with notable contributions from industry leaders, including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal and OYO CEO Ritesh Agarwal. BorderPlus has earmarked $10 million specifically for mergers and acquisitions, with the objective of establishing a firm presence in India, Germany, and significant destination markets.

Onea Care’s Role in Recruitment

Founded by Leon Bauer, Onea Care focuses on recruiting healthcare professionals for positions outside the EU. The firm collaborates with German healthcare providers to source nurses and also provides training in the applicants’ home countries through affiliated organisations. It ensures the entire recognition process is managed effectively while partnering with top universities, hospitals, and healthcare organisations in Germany.

Leon Bauer highlighted the strategic alignment between Onea Care and BorderPlus, stating, “BorderPlus shares our strong dedication to quality and fairness within the healthcare recruitment sector. This acquisition is poised to transform the recruitment landscape and tackle workforce deficits while maintaining the highest ethical and quality standards.”

Bauer added that merging Onea Care’s extensive experience in supplying premier healthcare talent with BorderPlus’ focus on Indian healthcare advancement will enhance the company’s capacity to scale ethical recruitment solutions, responding to the increasing demand for skilled nurses in Germany.

Anticipated Nursing Shortage in Germany

Germany is anticipated to require an additional 150,000 nurses by the year 2025, with a goal of recruiting 500,000 nurses by 2030 to combat the impending shortage. Given India’s pool of skilled and experienced nursing professionals, it is well-positioned to help meet this rising demand for healthcare talent.
