Digital Commerce Coalition Launches to Enhance India’s Ecommerce Sector

Digital commerce leaders, including Amazon, Meesho, Eternal (formerly Zomato), Swiggy, and Zepto, have collaboratively initiated the Digital Commerce Coalition, dedicated to advancing India’s digital commerce landscape. The coalition’s primary goal is to tackle critical concerns relating to consumer trust, responsible innovation, economic inclusion, and sustainable progress in the digital economy.

Goals of the Digital Commerce Coalition

As detailed in a statement released on Monday, this platform is designed to function as a meeting ground for stakeholders, facilitating policy discussions, research initiatives, and knowledge exchange. It will also concentrate on enhancing customer experience, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and improving supply chains alongside delivery partners.

Context of the Launch

The formation of the coalition occurs at a time when India’s digital commerce sector is experiencing significant growth, spurred by greater internet access, increasing adoption in smaller towns, emerging business models, and a wider engagement from enterprises of all sizes.

Support and Contributions

The Koan Advisory Group, a public policy consulting firm, will act as the secretariat for the coalition, aiding in its research and community engagement efforts. Dr. Jaskiran Bedi, Head of Public Policy at Eternal, highlighted that digital commerce enhances everyday purchasing convenience and opens new opportunities for livelihoods and entrepreneurship for millions.

Prachi Bhuchar, Head of Public Policy at Meesho, noted that digital commerce fosters entrepreneurship, especially for small enterprises and underserved communities. Rachit Ranjan, Chief Policy Officer at Zepto, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration to address challenges related to MSME access, supply chains, and consumer confidence.

Notable Absences

It is worth mentioning that Flipkart does not seem to be a member of this coalition. The Digital Commerce Coalition adds to the increasing number of industry advocacy organisations within India’s technology sector. Groups such as the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF), and the Startup Policy Forum (SPF) are already engaging with policymakers on various issues pertaining to internet and technology companies. The newly founded coalition, however, is particularly focused on the digital commerce realm, uniting firms like Amazon, Meesho, Eternal, Swiggy, and Zepto to address sector-specific initiatives.
