PhonePe and Visa Partner for Innovative Payment Solutions
PhonePe, a leading fintech company, has joined forces with Visa to introduce three new payment solutions: Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay, and Smart Accept. These solutions are designed to facilitate cardless payments for both consumers and merchants. The official unveiling took place at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026.
Understanding the Payment Solutions
With this partnership, PhonePe claims to be the first app in India to roll out Cross Border Scan to Pay for international transactions. This innovative feature will enable users to enjoy seamless payment experiences when travelling abroad.
Tap to Pay for Convenient Transactions
Under the Tap to Pay option, Android users can tokenize their Visa cards within PhonePe, allowing for contactless payments at point-of-sale machines. This feature is set to be introduced in phases, starting September 9, 2026.
Cross Border Scan to Pay for Global Reach
The Cross Border Scan to Pay will empower users to scan Visa-supported QR codes across 14 international markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, and South Korea. It’s anticipated that this feature will be available to users shortly.
Smart Accept for Small Merchants
Smart Accept is tailored for small merchants, enabling them to process card payments directly through their smartphones without the need for an additional point-of-sale device. Customers can conveniently pay by tapping their physical cards or tokenized mobile wallets on the merchant’s device.
Furthermore, Smart Accept will seamlessly integrate with PhonePe’s existing QR dashboard, permitting merchants to oversee card payments along with their other transactions efficiently.
A Stronger Payment Network
This strategic collaboration enhances Visa’s tokenisation and payment functionalities alongside PhonePe’s extensive consumer and merchant network, thereby broadening cardless payment options for users in India and for Indians travelling internationally. As of July 2026, PhonePe boasts over 71.5 crore registered users and a vast digital payment acceptance network exceeding 5 crore merchants.
