Sumit Jain Steps Down from Unacademy

Sumit Jain is stepping away from his full-time role at Unacademy prior to its acquisition by Mumbai-based upGrad. June 30 will mark his final day in an executive position. This announcement was made by Gaurav Munjal, the CEO of Unacademy, through an internal email sent to employees on Monday. Jain will maintain a connection with the company, transitioning into an advisory role.

Startup Superb has obtained a copy of the email. Munjal praised Jain for establishing two significant businesses within the Unacademy group: the creator platform Graphy and the offline coaching sector. According to Munjal, Jain’s acquisition of Spayee and its subsequent integration with Graphy significantly benefited the Unacademy Group. He also highlighted Jain’s success in making the offline business profitable by honing in on unit economics and pursuing franchise-led growth.

Jain’s Career Journey with Unacademy

Jain became part of Unacademy in 2020 following the company’s acquisition of his startup Opentalk. Before this venture, he co-founded CommonFloor, a real estate platform. He later took charge of Graphy, Unacademy’s SaaS platform designed for creators and educators. Notably, CommonFloor had previously acquired Munjal’s first startup, Flatchat, in 2016.

Promotion to CEO of Test Prep Business

In September 2025, Jain was promoted to the role of CEO for Unacademy’s flagship Test Prep business, which represents the core vertical of the company. At that time, the company acknowledged his leadership in driving financial discipline and enhancing product experiences within the test preparation sector.

Significance of Jain’s Departure

Jain’s exit occurs at a pivotal moment for Unacademy, as the company is in the process of being acquired by upGrad in an all-stock transaction. In March, the upskilling platform completed a term sheet for the acquisition of Unacademy, a deal valued at around Rs 2,055 crore, which is equivalent to approximately $218 million.
