Vama: Innovating Spiritual and Religious Services

Vama, a pioneering faith-tech startup that delivers virtual spiritual and religious services, has successfully secured Rs 22 crore (approximately $2.47 million) in a Pre-Series A funding round. This investment was led by Wavemaker Partners, alongside participation from 500 Global, Sadev Ventures, Venture Catalysts, Silverneedle Ventures, and a number of angel investors. Notably, this marks the first investment from 500 Global in Vama, while Wavemaker has reaffirmed its support after previously backing the company in 2023. Startup Superb was the first to disclose this development last week.

The funding will enable Vama to broaden its service categories, enhance its e-commerce capabilities, boost marketing efforts, and make preparations for international expansion. The startup operates with contribution margins exceeding 10%, with projections for EBITDA profitability as it scales further.

Growth and Offerings of Vama

Founded in 2020 by Acharya Dev and Manu Jain, Vama merges traditional practices with modern technology, offering devotees access to temple services, astrology consultations, and genuine spiritual products via its platform. The recently introduced e-commerce segment, Vama Mall, is experiencing rapid growth, with plans to extend into offline spiritual travel and services catering to the NRI market.

Vama has reported a remarkable doubling of its revenues in FY24, reaching Rs 19.5 crore, and is poised to double again in FY25. Temple services make up 70% of the revenue, while astrology and Vama Mall account for the remainder. With over 150,000 active users engaging with the platform, Vama aims to grow its user base to 1 million within the next two years, and plans to increase its partnerships with temples from 250 to 500.

Competitive Landscape

In the competitive market of faith-tech, Vama faces challenges from apps like AppsForBharat, which recently secured $20 million in a Series C funding round. Other notable competitors include DevDham, Utsav App, Sutradhar, and Ghar Mandir, among others.
