Venomics AI: Pioneering Drug Discovery with Venom Technology

Venomics AI, a biotechnology enterprise originating from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has successfully obtained US$2.7 million in its inaugural institutional funding round. This pre-seed funding round was collectively led by Speciale Invest and South Park Commons, with involvement from Operators Studio. The funds will be utilised for expansion, enhancing the molecular dataset, and bolstering artificial intelligence and laboratory screening capabilities, as detailed in a press release from Venomics AI.

About Venomics AI

Co-founded in May this year by Sunagar and Vinay Prabhu, Venomics AI represents an IISc spin-out that integrates venom biology, molecular sequencing, AI, and experimental screening to identify and develop therapeutic leads derived from venom. The company is in the process of constructing the Venom Atlas, aiming to link venom-based molecular data with laboratory validation and drug discovery.

Innovation at Scale

Based in Bengaluru, the startup strives to explore venom diversity on a large scale. Its platform merges molecular sequencing with venom biology to create the Venom Atlas, employing AI to prioritise prospective candidates and validating those theories through hands-on laboratory screening. Experimental findings not only contribute to future predictions but also enhance molecular design, bridging the gap between computational discovery and empirical results.

Strategic Development and Collaborations

By leveraging India’s rich venom biodiversity along with its scientific and computational skills, Venomics AI aims to establish a drug discovery platform in India configured for global therapeutic development. The company has laid the groundwork for its initial platform architecture, has joined the NVIDIA Inception programme, and has been recognised as one of the Top 5 finalists for the 2026 Indo-Boston Biotech Bridge Award.

Building a Multidisciplinary Team

The plan includes assembling a multidisciplinary team focusing on venom biology, computational science, and drug discovery, facilitating the validation and optimisation of promising therapeutic molecules.

Industry Trends and Opportunities

Startups in this domain are investigating bioactive peptides and proteins sourced from snake, scorpion, and marine animal venoms to unearth molecules with potential uses in pain relief, neurological disorders, cardiovascular issues, and various other therapeutic areas. A notable competitor is Snaayu Lifesciences, incubated at C-CAMP, which is engaged in the isolation and characterization of innovative analgesic compounds derived from cone snail venom.

The expanding AI-driven drug discovery sector is also capturing the attention of investors. For instance, Bengaluru-based Peptris Technologies raised Rs 70 crore in a Series A funding round co-led by IAN Alpha Fund and Speciale Invest in February this year, utilising AI-generated molecular discovery and empirical validation to propel potential drug candidates forward.
