Anupam Mittal on the Value of Traditional MBAs

Shark Tank India judge and entrepreneur Anupam Mittal has questioned the relevance of traditional MBAs, describing them as outdated and overrated in comparison to practical experience in creating real-world products.

In a post on LinkedIn, the founder of Shaadi.com encouraged students and young professionals to forego business school unless it is from a top-tier institution, and to focus instead on experiential learning.

Mittal, who has an MBA, indicated that his early experience as a product manager significantly influenced his entrepreneurial journey more than his formal education. He noted that while case studies and frameworks have their advantages, they do not equip individuals to challenge the status quo or manage differing stakeholder interests.

He highlighted actual product roles, such as product managers, robotics engineers, and AI specialists, as the most effective training for anyone aspiring to lead a business, advance their career, or excel in the 21st century.

The essence of being a builder, he explained, encompasses a blend of chaos, politics, creativity, and analysis — all at once. He described it as a microcosm of real life, rather than mere academic lessons.

Mittal also pointed out that embracing the builder’s role necessitates the ability to synthesise data, craft engaging narratives, and “play long games” — qualities he attributes to his entrepreneurial triumphs.

His parting advice was clear: If pursuing an MBA is essential, one should select a Tier 1 institution, or preferably, take a break for a few months to gain hands-on experience, particularly in the field of AI.
