Google Expands Digital Identity Services in India
Google is enhancing its digital identity services in India, enabling users to securely store Aadhaar-based verifiable credentials directly in Google Wallet. This initiative is part of a larger global strategy to promote secure digital IDs.
Convenient and Secure Digital IDs
The introduction of digital IDs provides a practical solution for verifying identity without the need for physical documentation. The company emphasised its commitment to expand access across the globe.
Partnership with UIDAI
Building upon its collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Google has announced that users in India can now save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials on their devices. This development leads to what Google terms a secure, digital-first ID for everyday applications.
Privacy and Security Focus
The company highlighted the importance of privacy and security in this rollout. Effective digital IDs must be secure, private, and functional in both physical and digital environments.
Advanced Privacy Features
Google introduced advanced privacy features such as selective disclosure. This allows only pertinent details of an individual’s ID to be shared when necessary, ensuring users have a reliable way to manage their identity securely.
Partner Ecosystem for Identity Verification
The initial network of partners consists of various sectors, including entertainment and services, where identity verification is essential. Key partners include PVR INOX for age verification and rewards, BharatMatrimony for verified profiles, visa services platform Atlys for auto-filling applications, and residential management platform Mygate for visitor verification. Additionally, gig economy platform Snabbit is anticipated to adopt such verification methods soon.
Foundation of Security and Interoperability
Google reiterated that security, privacy, and interoperability form the core of their digital identity strategy, which integrates these principles at every level.
Global Expansion of Digital ID Capabilities
In addition to its efforts in India, Google is also extending its digital ID features to other regions. Users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil can now create ID passes based on their passport details and securely store them in Google Wallet.
This development offers a straightforward and private means to confirm identity or age for both online and in-person services that require such verification, like signing into accounts.
