AI-Enabled NETRAM Police Control Room in Gujarat

The AI-enabled NETRAM Police Control Room is a groundbreaking development in Gujarat’s policing system, recently inaugurated in Surat. This facility, launched by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, marks a significant technological leap for law enforcement. The core purpose of the NETRAM system is to dramatically improve real-time surveillance and enhance the capabilities for crime detection.

High-Tech Surveillance Integration

According to Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, this control room is linked to 1,640 sophisticated cameras placed throughout the city. This network employs various specialized camera types to ensure comprehensive coverage and maximised monitoring efficiency. Among the notable technology included are advanced automatic number plate recognition cameras, important for tracking the movements of suspect vehicles; red light violation detection cameras, which automatically enforce traffic laws; and a vast array of general AI-enabled cameras designed for extensive analytical surveillance.

Proactive Policing through Artificial Intelligence

The innovative aspect of the NETRAM system lies in its incorporation of artificial intelligence for proactive policing measures. Commissioner Gehlot stated that the control room connects to a comprehensive database containing information about known and wanted criminals. The police have uploaded essential details and images of these individuals into the AI-enabled camera system. This allows the system to continuously compare real-time video feeds with the offender data. If the AI detects any activity or sighting of a wanted person, it will immediately notify the control room operators.

This advanced functionality shifts the police approach from a reactive stance to a highly proactive one, enabling officers to quickly intercept suspects, thereby fostering a safer environment for the residents of Surat.
