Perplexity.ai has rejected claims circulating on social media that Airtel subscribers in India are experiencing a downgraded version of its premium Perplexity Pro plan through a company-sponsored offer. This statement follows a Reddit post that became viral, alleging that the bundled service was not performing as well as the paid Pro version and the complimentary version of the AI tool.

Reddit Allegations on Service Quality

The viral Reddit post, which garnered significant attention with hundreds of upvotes, accused the Airtel-linked account of slower response times, skipped citations, lack of visual elements such as charts, and occasionally providing less insightful responses. The author referred to the service as a “Pro-Lite” version, which ignited discussions among users and raised concerns regarding the partnership.

Clarification from Perplexity.ai

In an interview with Financial Express, Jesse Dwyer from Perplexity.ai dismissed these claims as “absolutely false”. He mentioned, “Having collaborated closely with the Airtel team throughout this partnership and being well-informed about the specific terms of this deal, it can be confirmed that Airtel customers receive the same version of Perplexity Pro as our paying subscribers. India holds significant importance for us as a company, and we aim to rectify this misunderstanding for the Indian audience.” He added that misinformation about Perplexity frequently circulates online, sometimes used by individuals to increase their follower counts on platforms like Reddit and X.

Perplexity emphasised that Airtel users access the complete advantages of the Pro plan, which includes features like advanced AI models, file uploads, image generation, and other premium tools. This subscription, which has an annual value of ₹17,000, is offered at no additional cost to users on Airtel’s 5G plan, positioning it as a prominent benefit of their alliance with the AI company.
