Highlights
NFT Passport Stamps by American Express
American Express is unveiling NFT passport stamps for its consumer cardholders in the US, introducing a blockchain-based method for celebrating travel experiences. These digital stamps are securely stored as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum’s layer-2 Base network, offering personalised mementos of each journey.
Features of the NFT Stamps
Each NFT stamp captures details about the country visited, accompanied by a brief description. Users have the option to personalise the stamp with unique highlights from their trips, such as notable landmarks, unforgettable meals, or memorable hotel stays.
Innovation Amid Change
As the traditional physical passport stamps are fading away, Amex Passport offers cardholders a novel way to celebrate their travel experiences. Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President at Amex Digital Labs, noted that the initiative enables card members to cherish their journeys.
Privacy Protection on Blockchain
Amex assured that the NFT stamps do not store any personal information, thereby safeguarding cardholder privacy on the blockchain. Furthermore, the stamps are non-transferable, guaranteeing that each remains unique to the original traveller. Card members can opt to share their stamps on social media or save them on their devices.
Consumer Interest and Market Trends
Data from BaseScan indicates that the smart contract for the Amex travel stamp was deployed nearly a month ago. The announcement follows a survey showing that 73 per cent of participants wish to commemorate digital trips, while 56 per cent expressed a longing for physical passport stamps. Amex views this feature as a blend of nostalgia with a secure and decentralised record of travel.
NFT Market Revival
This development arrives at a time when NFT markets are regaining momentum. In August 2025, trading volumes for NFTs reached $578 million (₹4,800 crore), and the overall market capitalisation surged to $9.3 billion (₹77,000 crore), reflecting a 40 per cent increase within a month.
Industry Adoption of NFTs
American Express joins a burgeoning array of companies exploring NFTs to enhance customer engagement:
- Lufthansa has launched Uptrip, a loyalty programme allowing passengers to collect NFT trading cards that can be redeemed for lounge access and upgrades.
- Mastercard unveiled its Artist Accelerator programme, offering NFT passes for exclusive music content.
- Starbucks tested Starbucks Odyssey, which integrated its rewards programme with NFT-based “Journey Stamps”, though this initiative was eventually discontinued.
