Apple Expands Its Repair Operations in India with Tata Group

Apple has assigned after-sales repair responsibilities for iPhones and MacBooks to India’s Tata Group, marking a significant expansion of Tata’s involvement in Apple’s supply chain, as per a Reuters report citing two sources familiar with the developments.

As Apple moves away from a manufacturing model heavily reliant on China, Tata has quickly become a pivotal partner. The Tata Group already assembles iPhones for both local and international markets across three facilities in southern India, with one facility also responsible for producing specific iPhone components.

Details of the Transition

According to Reuters, this new arrangement involves Tata taking over the repair operations from ICT Service Management Solutions, the Indian branch of Taiwan-based Wistron. The repair work will be conducted at Tata’s iPhone assembly facility located in Karnataka, sources indicated.

The Growing Repair Market in India

The repair market within India, the second-largest smartphone market globally, is poised for substantial growth as the demand for iPhones rises. Data from Counterpoint Research highlights that approximately 11 million iPhones were sold in India in 2023, granting Apple a 7% market share, a significant increase from a mere 1% in 2020.

This expansion underscores Apple’s growing trust in Tata, as one source mentioned to Reuters. Analysts believe this trend could eventually set the stage for Apple to introduce refurbished devices in India, akin to its operational approach in the United States.

Potential for Refurbished Devices in India

Tata’s evolving partnership with Apple may also establish a pathway for Apple to directly offer refurbished devices in India, similar to its practices in the United States, as noted by Prabhu Ram, Vice President at CyberMedia Research, in his statement to Reuters.

Transitioning Operations

The transition from Wistron’s ICT to Tata is currently in progress, with sources requesting anonymity due to their lack of authorisation to speak publicly. Notably, Apple and Wistron did not respond to inquiries for comment, while Tata’s spokesperson refrained from making any statements.

While Apple’s authorised service centres in India will continue to manage simpler repairs, more complex issues will now be routed to Tata’s facility. However, Wistron’s ICT unit will still cater to clients outside of Apple’s umbrella, as per Reuters.

This development aligns with Apple’s wider strategic shift. With global supply chains diversifying amid geopolitical uncertainties, particularly concerning trade relations with China, India’s significance as a manufacturing hub continues to swell. Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that most iPhones sold in the United States during the June quarter would be produced in India.
