Foldable iPhone: Apple’s Upcoming Innovation

Foldable iPhone developments suggest that Apple is advancing towards the launch of its inaugural foldable phone. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that a release is targeted for late 2026, with display orders already made to Samsung.

Production Timelines and Partnerships

Insights from Apple’s assembly partner Foxconn reveal preparations may commence in the third quarter of 2025. Mass production is anticipated to begin in the latter half of 2026. This follows earlier reports confirming Apple was exploring foldable device options but had not yet settled on a specific timeline for release.

Display Components and Specifications

While many components, such as a unique “liquid metal hinge,” are still under development, the display specifications appear to be confirmed. According to Kuo, Apple has placed orders for between 7 and 8 million foldable panels from Samsung Display. This choice positions Samsung as the primary display supplier, a strategic decision considering Samsung’s leadership in the foldable OLED market.

Projected Production Volumes

The anticipated production volume for the foldable iPhone is situated between 15 and 20 million units. However, these figures are expected to serve user demand throughout the device’s lifecycle rather than solely for a single launch year. Kuo highlights that the premium pricing of the phone may restrict initial sales, making it improbable for Apple to sell its entire stock in 2026 alone.

A report adds, “Apple has ordered 7–8 million foldable panels,” while indicating that production figures for foldable iPhones range from 15 to 20 million units.

Market Landscape

If these estimates are accurate, Apple’s foldable phone will debut after competitors such as Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have already established market footholds. Nonetheless, Apple is recognised for its strategy of entering categories after the technology has matured, often debuting later but with improved execution.
