AirPods Enhancements: Studio-Quality Audio and Remote Camera Control
AirPods have received an impressive update, introducing studio-quality audio recording and remote camera control features in the AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Pro 2. These advancements aim to enhance the user experience for content creation and communication while on the move, making Apple’s earbuds incredibly versatile.
The new features will be launched as a complimentary firmware update later this year, alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. Developers can start testing these functionalities immediately through the Apple Developer Program, and a public beta will be available next month.
Recording Audio, Anywhere with AirPods
Among the standout additions is the studio-quality audio recording capability, allowing users to capture high-fidelity vocals with only their AirPods. This feature is especially beneficial for podcasters, vloggers, musicians, and field interviewers who often operate in dynamic or noisy settings.
Utilising Voice Isolation, enabled by the H2 chip, along with beamforming microphones and computational audio, background noise is considerably diminished, resulting in cleaner and more authentic audio recordings. These improvements function seamlessly across various Apple devices and applications, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while also supporting tools such as FaceTime, Voice Memos, dictation in Messages, and third-party applications like Webex.
AirPods Function as a Camera Remote
Another significant update is the capacity to manage the camera remotely using the AirPods’ stem. While utilising the native Camera app or compatible third-party camera applications on an iPhone or iPad, users can effortlessly press and hold the AirPods stem to capture a photo or begin a video. Pressing and holding again will cease the recording.
This feature proves particularly advantageous for solo creators—singers, dancers, or fitness influencers—who require the ability to start recording while performing from a distance, eliminating the need to return to the device.
Clearer Voice Quality on Calls
Additionally, the update enhances voice clarity during calls. Users can anticipate sharper and more expressive audio while communicating through Apple’s native Phone app or CallKit-enabled third-party applications, thanks to Apple’s advanced voice rendering technologies.
Availability of New Features
All the newly introduced AirPods functionalities will be rolled out this autumn, compatible with AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Pro 2. Although Apple has not specified compatibility with earlier models, these enhancements reflect its commitment to deeper hardware-software integration through custom chips like the H2.
Developer testing for these features has commenced today, with a public beta set for next month.
