The App Store ecosystem has achieved an impressive $1.3 trillion (approximately ₹108 lakh crore) in developer billings and sales for 2024, according to an independent analysis by Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University and Dr. Jessica Burley of the Analysis Group. Notably, over 90% of these transactions were conducted without developers incurring any commission costs to Apple.

Apple’s CEO Praises Developer Innovation

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, expressed enthusiasm about the thriving developer community. He remarked that it is remarkable to see numerous developers creating exceptional apps and building businesses that connect them to Apple users globally. The report reflects how developers are enhancing lives through app and game experiences while fostering innovation and opportunities.

Significant Growth Across Categories

The study illustrates substantial growth in global and regional sectors over three primary revenue streams: digital goods and services ($131 billion/₹10.9 lakh crore), physical goods and services (exceeding $1 trillion/₹83 lakh crore), and in-app advertising ($150 billion/₹12.4 lakh crore). Notably, the spike in physical goods spending was driven chiefly by surging online food delivery and grocery shopping.

Investments in digital content creation tools, such as photo editing applications and video editing software, have also demonstrated consistent growth. Apple’s 2024 Mac App of the Year award winners, including Adobe Photoshop for iPhone and Adobe Lightroom, exemplify this increasing demand.

Regional Insights: US, China, and Europe Lead Growth

Mobile payments are prevalent in the United States, while online grocery shopping in China has expanded dramatically. Europe has seen food delivery and pickup expenditures more than triple in recent years.

Supporting Developer Success Globally

Apple is making robust investments in various tools and initiatives to help developers scale internationally. The App Store accommodates over 40 local currencies and oversees tax management across nearly 200 regions. Developers benefit from tools such as Xcode for testing, insights from App Analytics on user performance, and promotional utilities like Product Page Optimisation.

Additionally, more than $9 billion (₹75,000 crore) in fraudulent transactions were thwarted by Apple over the last five years, underlining its dedication to secure commerce practices.

Training and Development Initiatives

Training programs form an essential component of Apple’s ecosystem support, with Developer Academies and Foundation Programs located in the U.S., Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and beyond, designed to assist students and professionals in learning coding, design, and AI skills. These initiatives are further enriched by online platforms, including Apple Developer Forums, Pathways, and the Feedback Assistant.
