Apple Enhances iPhone Exports from India Amid Tariff Concerns
Apple has significantly increased its reliance on India’s iPhone manufacturing capabilities during March, in response to an impending tariff threat from US President Donald Trump. A report from Reuters indicates that Apple successfully exported almost $2 billion worth of iPhones from India to the United States in March, marking an unprecedented level of exports from the country.
Record iPhone Shipments to the US
The report reveals that Apple organised six cargo flights, transporting 600 tons of iPhones to the US in an effort to ensure adequate inventory levels in one of its largest markets, aiming to “outpace the tariffs,” as per a source from Reuters.
Impact of Tariffs on Apple’s Strategy
This strategy was directly influenced by the Trump administration’s imposition of substantial tariffs on imports from China. While India also faced tariffs, they were set at 26%, notably lower compared to those imposed on China. Following this announcement, Trump issued a temporary three-month suspension on tariffs for all nations, with China being a significant exclusion.
Foxconn’s Record Exports from India
Customs data analysed by Reuters indicates that Foxconn, the primary supplier for Apple in India, exported smartphones valued at $1.31 billion in March, marking its highest monthly total to date. This figure equaled the combined shipments for January and February. Noteworthy models included the Apple iPhone 13, 14, 16, and 16e, bringing Foxconn’s cumulative shipments from India to the US in 2023 to $5.3 billion.
Tata Electronics’ Contribution to iPhone Exports
Moreover, exports from Tata Electronics, another of Apple’s suppliers, reached $612 million in March, reflecting a significant 63% increase from the previous month, with shipments comprising the iPhone 15 and 16 models.
Apple’s Efforts to Streamline Customs Clearance
In addition to increasing exports, Reuters reported that Apple made advocacy efforts with Indian airport authorities to reduce the customs clearance duration at Chennai airport to six hours, a considerable decrease from the previous 30 hours.
