Asus and Microsoft Introduce the Xbox Ally Handheld: Specs, Features, and Release Details

Introducing the ROG Xbox Ally: Microsoft’s New Handheld Gaming Devices

Microsoft has officially announced its first handheld gaming devices branded with Xbox, created in collaboration with ASUS. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are designed to offer an unparalleled portable gaming experience, merging Xbox’s power with the adaptability of Windows.

During a recent virtual launch event, Sarah Bond, the Xbox President, described these devices as “an Xbox you can hold in your hands.” This innovation allows users to access their complete gaming library wherever they may be, featuring titles from the Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, GOG, and Ubisoft Connect.

This launch is part of Project Kennan, a collaborative initiative between Microsoft and ASUS that has been under development for over a year.

Two Models Designed for Varied Gaming Preferences

The white ROG Xbox Ally caters to mainstream gamers, offering impressive 720p performance, powered by the newly unveiled AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor. This model comes equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, enabling support for resolutions up to 1080p on a 7-inch 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate).

In contrast, the more robust ROG Xbox Ally X is intended for high-performance gaming. It boasts an advanced AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage, proficiently handling games at resolutions between 900p and 1080p.

Both models retain the fundamental design of ASUS’ existing handheld gaming PCs while incorporating Microsoft’s software enhancements to create a more user-friendly, console-like Windows experience.

A New Handheld-Optimised Xbox Interface

A noteworthy addition is the newly developed full-screen Xbox experience on Windows, serving as a launcher and comprehensive interface for all leading PC gaming platforms. This interface is designed to simplify navigation on smaller screens and launches immediately upon powering on the device, bypassing conventional desktop and background processes to maximise memory for gameplay.

Further enhancements include an upgraded Xbox Game Bar, now more compatible with controllers and featuring improved functionalities such as quick app switching, easy settings access, and seamless navigation between games and platforms. A dedicated Xbox button enables rapid return to the home screen, similar to the functionality found on Xbox consoles.

Other advancements incorporate the ability to log into Windows using the controller without the need for touchscreen input and the effortless launching of popular applications like Discord.

Designed for Portability and Comfort

Both Xbox Ally models are crafted with ergonomically contoured hand grips, inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers, ensuring comfort for a wide range of hand sizes. Users can enjoy their games on the move while also accessing features like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play, enabling game streaming from an Xbox Series X at home or playing directly from the cloud.

As an added incentive, Microsoft is providing complimentary access to Game Pass for new users purchasing these devices, granting instant access to an extensive library of games, including titles like Balatro, Gears Tactics, and Vampire Survivors.

The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are anticipated to launch by the end of the year.
