EOS R6 MARK III: The Latest in Canon’s Mirrorless Innovations

EOS R6 MARK III has been introduced by Canon, enhancing its renowned EOS R mirrorless series with a new full-frame camera and the RF45mm F1.2 STM lens. This large aperture standard prime lens is specifically crafted for professional filmmakers and photographers across various fields.

The EOS R6 MARK III replaces the EOS R6 Mark II, released in 2023, and sets a new standard for its category. It boasts a notable 32.5-megapixel resolution, along with enhancements in speed, performance, and reliability. Additionally, the camera features impressive video functions tailored for professional workflows, including advancements such as 7K 60p internal RAW and Open Gate video support.

Higher Resolution and Speed

With the 32.5-megapixel resolution of the EOS R6 MARK III, individuals can capture intricate details in superb clarity, offering flexibility for cropping. This increased megapixel value is particularly beneficial for achieving tight crops on distant subjects. The camera is capable of capturing around 150 shots while shooting at speeds of up to 40 frames per second (fps) in high-speed continuous shooting mode, using the electronic shutter. It successfully maintains this rapid shooting rate of up to 40 fps (electronic shutter) and 12 fps (mechanical/electronic first-curtain shutter) despite the greater processing demands.

For ‘Capturing the Moment’, the EOS R6 MARK III comes equipped with a convenient pre-continuous shooting feature, recording up to 20 shots continuously before the shutter button is completely pressed, available in various still recording formats like RAW, C-RAW, and HEIF across all AF modes. With the EOS R6 MARK III, a ‘Leap in Video Capabilities’ is evident through expanded recording and post-production options. It allows for 7K 60p internal RAW video recording directly onto a CF-express Type B card and becomes the first EOS R series device to offer 3:2 Open Gate recording (up to 7K 30p RAW). This feature enhances post-production flexibility when reframing content, especially for creating both horizontal and vertical videos from identical footage.

The variety of recording formats has been broadened to include internal RAW recording, Canon Log 2, and HLG gamma recording capabilities, in addition to the existing Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ. The camera also supports the Cinema EOS range’s Custom Picture (CP) profiles, together with custom LUTs, to set recording specifications such as gamma, colour sampling, and bit depth. While shooting, users can apply 14 Colour Filters for immediate colour grading effects on stills or videos. Moreover, similar to the EOS R5 Mark II, it supports waveform monitor display, along with false colours and zebras, for achieving precise exposure on set.

The design retains the robust body of the EOS R6 Mark II, enhanced with more customisation options for buttons.

The RF45mm F1.2 STM lens stands out as Canon’s widest aperture non-professional option in its RF lens collection. Recognised as a ‘Powerful and Cost-Efficient’ choice, this lens is compact, lightweight, and an economical selection for those seeking exceptional bokeh effects. With a weight of around 346g, it is the smallest f/1.2 lens in both the EF and RF ranges.

When combined with the EOS R6 MARK III, the f/1.2 maximum aperture facilitates ample light access to the sensor, maximising the potential of the camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system in low-light conditions. This combination ensures crisp, clean images even at slower shutter speeds, enhanced by the device’s 5-axis image stabilisation.
