ChatGPT Expansion: New Interactive Applications

OpenAI has announced an exciting ChatGPT expansion, bringing forth a system that enables developers to create interactive applications directly within the chatbot. Starting Monday, users will have the opportunity to access applications from renowned companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva right within their ChatGPT conversations.

Details of the ChatGPT Expansion

The announcement was made during OpenAI’s annual developer conference, DevDay 2025. The company also showcased a preview of its new Apps SDK, designed to simplify the process of building applications compatible with ChatGPT.

CEO’s Vision for ChatGPT

CEO Sam Altman expressed the intention behind this initiative, stating that OpenAI aims for ChatGPT to serve as a valuable tool for users to enhance their productivity, innovate, and accelerate their learning. The introduction of applications within ChatGPT is expected to facilitate interactive, adaptive, and personalised experiences that users can engage with conversationally.

Creating an App Ecosystem

This initiative signifies OpenAI’s latest step in establishing an app ecosystem surrounding ChatGPT. In contrast to the previous GPT Store, which functioned as a standalone hub, this new system seamlessly integrates third-party tools into ChatGPT’s interface. Users can now invoke applications through natural language commands, providing a smoother workflow.

Examples of New Functionality

For instance, a user can request, “Figma, transform this sketch into a usable diagram,” or “Coursera, can you share insights about machine learning?” A demonstration of Zillow’s app illustrated how ChatGPT could generate interactive maps displaying rental apartments tailored to user preferences.

Automatic App Suggestions

ChatGPT will also automatically suggest apps when relevant. If a user inquires about a party playlist, ChatGPT might recommend the Spotify application. OpenAI indicated that future integrations are set to include services like DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, and AllTrails.

Technical Framework

The integration operates on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a secure framework allowing developers to connect their data sources to AI models. Applications can deliver interactive interfaces, play embedded videos, and execute specific actions within the chat. Users subscribed to participating services will also be able to log into their accounts within ChatGPT for access to premium features.

Opportunities for Developers

Altman mentioned that OpenAI has plans to create monetisation avenues for developers, including payments via its newly launched Instant Checkout feature.

Privacy Considerations

Nevertheless, privacy issues pose significant concerns. OpenAI emphasised that developers must “collect only the essential data they require and be clear about permissions.” The company has yet to disclose the extent of a user’s conversational history that an app may access or how ChatGPT will differentiate between competing services like DoorDash and Instacart.

OpenAI asserts that enhancing user experience will remain the priority in how applications are introduced and integrated into ChatGPT.
