Nex Playground Console Outperforms Xbox Series X/S During Black Friday

Nex Playground, a family-centric console, surprisingly outsold Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S models during the key Black Friday sales week in the United States, as reported by the industry analysis firm Circana. This unexpected triumph for the motion-controlled device indicates a notable shift in consumer preferences towards more affordable and active gaming options.

The Sales Data Reveal Shifts in the Gaming Market

For the week ending 29th November, the Nex Playground ranked third in hardware unit sales, presenting a significant challenge to the gaming sector’s established ‘Big Three’ manufacturers. The PlayStation 5 led the sales charts, capturing around 47% of the overall console sales, followed by the new Nintendo Switch 2, which accounted for 24%. The Nex Playground achieved a commendable 14%, positioning itself above the combined sales of the Xbox Series S and X consoles.

The Rise of the Nex Playground

The Nex Playground, an economical and cube-shaped console powered by an Android-based operating system, is equipped with a built-in motion-sensing camera. Its design resembles that of the original Xbox Kinect, allowing players to engage in games using physical movements instead of conventional controllers.

With a retail price around $250 (approximately Rs 22,684), along with significant discounts during Black Friday, the Nex Playground appeals to parents wanting active gaming alternatives for their children. Its game library features popular family titles like Fruit Ninja and includes content from franchises such as Bluey.

Factors Contributing to Success

Industry experts believe that this success stemmed from several elements, including aggressive holiday promotions that placed the Nex Playground squarely in the impulse-buy category, as well as a strong market desire for active gaming devices. In contrast, Microsoft did not offer similar holiday price reductions on its Xbox consoles.

Moreover, the demand for the Nex Playground was evident prior to Black Friday, as it had already surpassed PlayStation 5 sales briefly in the week leading up to the event. Analysts have identified that the console has discovered a niche within the industry, appealing to a large audience that values accessible, family-oriented enjoyment more than cutting-edge graphics. However, the ongoing challenge for this emerging brand will be to sustain its sales momentum beyond the festive shopping period.
