Claude Chatbot Memory Feature Unveiled by Anthropic
Claude chatbot by Anthropic now boasts a new memory feature, enabling users to effortlessly access and reference previous conversations upon request. This function, revealed on Monday, is aimed at assisting users in continuing projects smoothly without having to restart their discussions from the beginning.
In a recent demonstration on YouTube, a user inquired about their activities prior to a vacation, prompting Claude to retrieve earlier chats, summarise the information, and propose a continuation of the same project. Anthropic highlighted this new capability by stating that users can “never lose track of their work again,” as Claude now retains past conversations, allowing for seamless project continuation, reference to earlier discussions, and the enhancement of ideas without the need to start over.
Availability and Functionality
The memory feature is operational across web, desktop, and mobile platforms of Claude, categorising conversations into distinct projects and workspaces. It is available starting today for Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers through the “Search and reference chats” option within profile settings, with plans for a wider rollout in the near future.
Differences from Competing Technologies
It is important to note that this tool differs from persistent memory functionalities such as those in OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Ryan Donegan, an Anthropic spokesperson, clarified that Claude is designed to retrieve and reference past chats only when specifically prompted, and does not create a long-term user profile.
Context of the Update
This update arrives during a period of heightened competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, as both firms explore enhancements including voice interaction, larger context windows, and new subscription models. Recently, OpenAI introduced GPT-5, while Anthropic is actively seeking funding with a valuation that might reach up to £170 billion.
The introduction of memory features has triggered discussions in recent weeks. ChatGPT’s persistent recall capabilities have garnered both acclaim and criticism; many users appreciate the productivity benefits and opportunities for personal reflection, while others express concerns regarding privacy issues and the potential effects on mental health.
