Grok 3 Chatbot Unveiled by Elon Musk and xAI
Elon Musk and xAI have today unveiled their Grok 3 chatbot. This AI model has been described by Musk as the “smartest AI on Earth.” During the unveiling event, Musk sat alongside members of xAI’s team, who illustrated Grok 3’s capabilities and its potential to rival and surpass other AI models from major names such as OpenAI, Google, and DeepSeek. Musk expressed confidence in Grok by stating that individuals would find themselves enamoured with it.
Origin of the Name Grok
Users have been curious about the rationale behind the name Grok chosen by xAI and Musk for their AI model. The term has roots in Robert Heinlein’s novel, Stranger in a Strange Land. In this story, a character raised on Mars uses the word to indicate a profound and complete understanding of something. The essence of ‘grok’ embodies deep comprehension, with empathy being a significant element of that notion.
Musk was enthusiastic about introducing Grok 3 and commended his team for the swift development leading up to its release. He commented that Grok 3 represents a substantial advancement compared to Grok 2 within a brief timeframe.
Grok 3 Excels in Performance Benchmarks
It came as no surprise that a significant portion of the launch event concentrated on benchmark evaluations and comparisons with leading AI models. Musk and the xAI team exhibited how Grok 3 outperformed all its competitors, including Gemini 2 Pro, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT 4o, and DeepSeek V3 in various areas such as mathematics, science, and coding benchmarks.
Additionally, Musk revealed that Grok 3 features a reasoning model akin to those found in OpenAI’s o3 Mini, DeepSeek R1, and the recently introduced Gemini 2.0 Flash Reasoning. This new functionality will enable Grok 3 to display its reasoning process to users, providing insight into how the chatbot resolves issues and responds to user queries.
Introduction of Grok 3 Deep Search
To enhance its competitive edge, xAI also introduced ‘Deep Search’, an AI agent specifically designed for Grok. Deep Search operates similarly to OpenAI’s Deep Research AI agent, helping users conduct research queries and receive thorough answers efficiently. Musk highlighted the practicality of Deep Search, stating that tasks that typically require extensive time spent scrolling through the web or social media could now be completed quickly; a request made to the agent could eliminate an hour’s work in just 10 minutes.
Accessing Grok 3
The rollout of Grok 3 has commenced as stated by Musk during the launch event. It will be accessible for subscribers of X’s Premium+ plans, which start at ₹1,525 monthly or ₹18,300 annually. Furthermore, Musk announced an additional subscription tier called Super Grok, designed for devoted fans eager for advanced features and priority access to new updates.
