Karnataka: The Next Powerhouse in Apple’s Global Supply Chain

Karnataka is set to emerge as a key player in Apple’s global supply chain, with the Foxconn electronics manufacturing unit in Devanahalli nearing completion. M B Patil, Karnataka’s Minister for Commerce and Industries, announced that the facility is almost ready for operation, with made-in-India iPhones expected to begin commercial shipments as early as June.

This development is more than just a milestone in manufacturing; it signifies a strategic transformation. With increasing geopolitical and tariff challenges, India is rapidly becoming Apple’s preferred production centre, as highlighted in Patil’s recent post on X. He stressed that this advancement solidifies Karnataka’s position in global manufacturing and paves the way for fresh foreign investments.

Scale and Impact of the Project

Emphasising the project’s magnitude, Patil mentioned that Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that a significant number of iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter will be assembled in India, marking a considerable shift away from China amid rising global trade tensions.

“As a proud Kannadiga, this moment is significant,” said Patil. He pointed out that from Mysuru to Cupertino, Karnataka is gaining international recognition.

Foxconn Facility Details

The newly established Foxconn facility covers 300 acres in the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) Industrial Area, located within Doddaballapura and Devanahalli Taluk in the Bengaluru Rural District. This plant follows a substantial capital investment of Rs 21,911 crore, as mentioned in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Budget speech for 2025-26. The state is also providing project incentives worth Rs 6,970 crore, facilitated by the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) initiative.

As Apple aims to diversify its production framework and mitigate supply chain risks, India is emerging as a vital manufacturing hub, presenting an opportunity that could transform the global electronics industry.
