Foxconn’s Workforce Expansion for iPhone Manufacturing

Foxconn, the leading contract manufacturer for Apple, has successfully onboarded nearly 30,000 employees at its new iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli, located near Bengaluru. This significant recruitment initiative, completed in a mere nine months, stands as the fastest industrial scale-up ever recorded in India.

The Importance of the New Facility

The expansive 300-acre campus is a key component of Apple’s strategy to spread its manufacturing operations beyond China. A standout feature of this plant is its workforce composition, with about 80% of the employees being women. The majority of these workers are aged between 19 and 24, marking their entry into the formal job scene for the first time.

Advancements in Production

Since commencing trial production in the spring, the plant has swiftly progressed from assembling the iPhone 16 to producing the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max models. The scale of operations is significant, with over 80% of the factory’s production currently aimed at global markets.

Creating a Sustainable Community

To accommodate its large workforce, Foxconn is developing the site into a self-sufficient mini-township. The campus currently includes six large dormitories for staff, with plans to incorporate medical facilities, schools, and leisure amenities on-site.

Employee Benefits

Workers at the Devanahalli facility enjoy complimentary housing and subsidised meals. With an average monthly salary around ₹18,000, these positions are regarded as some of the top-paying blue-collar jobs for women in the region.

A Bright Future Ahead

The facility is still under development. Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, is dedicating approximately ₹20,000 crore to this project. Analysts within the industry predict that the workforce will expand to 50,000 by next year as additional assembly lines are activated.

Setting New Standards in Manufacturing

Once fully operational, the Bengaluru site is anticipated to surpass Foxconn’s existing operations in Tamil Nadu, positioning it as the largest electronics manufacturing hub in India and a global standard for women-led industrial initiatives.
