Moltbot: The Evolved AI Assistant

Moltbot, the free open-source AI assistant that gained significant popularity on X (previously Twitter), has officially rebranded from its original name, Clawdbot.

The Rebranding Decision

The name change comes after communication from Anthropic, the company behind Claude, whose models have been integral to Moltbot’s functionality. Peter Steinberger, the project’s creator, indicated that trademark issues necessitated the new name and shared the update on X.

Announcement Highlights

In his announcement, Steinberger expressed enthusiasm about the new name, stating, “Molt” perfectly encapsulates the transformation process lobsters undergo as they grow. He shared the news:

BIG NEWS: We’ve molted! Clawdbot → Moltbot Clawd → Molty Same lobster soul, new shell. Anthropic asked us to change our name (trademark stuff), and honestly? “Molt” fits perfectly – it’s what lobsters do to grow. New handle: @moltbot Same mission: AI that actually does…

New Mascot and Branding Changes

The mascot, which was a space lobster named Clawd, has also been transformed into Molty. Steinberger remarked on the effectiveness of the rebranding with the phrase, “New shell, same lobster soul.”

GitHub and Website Updates

Steinberger has already updated his GitHub repositories to reflect the new name, and the original clawd.bot website will soon transition to molt.bot.

The Functionality of Moltbot

Moltbot stands apart from traditional chatbots by performing tasks proactively for users. It falls under a category referred to as “agentic AI,” which enables systems to carry out actions automatically rather than merely responding to queries.

Capabilities of Agentic AI

For instance, Moltbot can oversee emails, manage calendars and documents, retain historical instructions, and notify users of crucial incoming messages. The concept of agentic AI has been one of the most significant aspirations within the tech industry, with many companies speculating that 2025 would mark its mainstream adoption. However, various high-profile attempts have yet to attain substantial success.
