Google’s AI Advancements: Geoffrey Hinton Insights

Google’s AI Advancements

Geoffrey Hinton, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and often referred to as the Godfather of AI, recently discussed Google’s strategic scaling of AI. In a conversation with Business Insider, Hinton mentioned the possibility of Google surpassing OpenAI soon.

Reports suggest that Google is making significant strides in the AI landscape, particularly with the debut of the Gemini 3 and Nano Banana Pro models. Users have been recognising their advanced capabilities, indicating that the new AI models are performing impressively compared to OpenAI’s GPT-5.

Insights from Geoffrey Hinton

Praising the tech giant, Hinton stated that it is quite unexpected that Google has not overtaken OpenAI until now but acknowledged that they are starting to gain the upper hand. With the introduction of the latest generation AI models, Google could potentially secure a million-dollar agreement with Meta for supplying in-house AI chips. Hinton believes that if this deal materialises, it would significantly benefit Google.

Highlights from Business Insider Interview

The Business Insider interview also explored Hinton’s experiences at Google Brain, where he pointed out that the company initially led the charge in AI but held back at crucial moments.

According to him, Google was the innovator behind transformers and developed substantial chatbots ahead of its competitors. Earlier this year, the company caught attention for its controversial release of image generation tools and AI summaries, which brought the issue of AI hallucinations into public discussion. Nonetheless, Google has since refined its strategy, gaining substantial traction among its users.
