Google Enhances Identity Check Security Feature for a Wider Range of Android Devices with Android 16

Identity Check Expands for Enhanced Android Security

Identity Check is a crucial security feature from Google that aims to thwart unauthorized access to sensitive settings and Google accounts in the event of smartphone theft. This feature is set to be expanded to more Android devices, including the OnePlus 13.

According to Android Authority, the feature was discovered in the beta version of Android 16 for the OnePlus 13. Initially rolled out on Google Pixel phones with the Android 15 QPR1 update in December 2024, Identity Check has also been incorporated into Samsung devices through One UI 7.

How Identity Check Works

Much like Apple’s Stolen Device Protection, which was introduced with iOS 17.3 in January 2024, Google’s Identity Check enhances the security of devices. It requires users to authenticate their identity using biometric methods, such as fingerprint scanning or facial recognition, before they can modify critical system settings. These settings include retrieving saved passwords, altering device PINs, or deactivating Find My Device, particularly when the phone is located in an unrecognised place.

Requirements and Activation of Identity Check

Once Android 16 becomes available later this year, smartphones that either update to this OS or come pre-installed with it will be able to utilise the Identity Check functionality, assuming they meet the criteria for Class 3 biometric authentication hardware.

To activate this feature, users should navigate to: Settings > Google > Theft Protection > Use Identity Check.

Once enabled, Identity Check provides an added layer of security for Google accounts on the device. This means that even if a thief memorises the passcode, they can’t gain control without the necessary biometric verification. Additionally, disabling the feature will require either biometric confirmation or access through a linked Google account.

While Apple users have enjoyed a similar level of security since early 2024, the broader introduction of Google’s Identity Check signifies a major advancement in Android’s theft prevention capabilities, offering strengthened protection to a wider array of smartphone users.
