Emergency Location Service Launch in India by Google

Google has introduced the Emergency Location Service (ELS) for users of Android devices in India. This innovative emergency functionality enables the sharing of a user’s location with emergency responders, including the police and ambulances, when the number 112 is called. The feature employs GPS, Wi-Fi, and data from mobile networks to accurately determine the caller’s location, typically within a 50-meter radius.

Uttar Pradesh Leads with Enhanced Caller Location

Google has noted that Uttar Pradesh is the first state in India to adopt enhanced caller location capabilities, automatically providing the precise location details of the caller. This service operates using a machine-learning-enhanced Android Fused Location Provider to relay location data to emergency services.

Free and Efficient Emergency Feature

The ELS is offered as a complimentary service and becomes active solely when the emergency number 112 is dialled. There is no need for any extra hardware or applications to transmit location information. Google’s assurance is that the geographical coordinates are sent directly to emergency services, facilitating the UP112 command infrastructure and PertSol’s routing system to dispatch police, medical, or firefighting assistance promptly. Moreover, the caller’s location remains confidential and is not stored by Google.

Global Implementation and Future Aspirations

This system is currently operational in more than 60 countries, aiding emergency teams in responding quickly and potentially saving lives. With the swift adoption of this emergency service in Uttar Pradesh, Google is encouraging other states in India to consider the benefits of this technology to further enhance the life-saving efforts of their local emergency services.
