Google Meet Now Supports Android Auto
Google Meet is introducing compatibility with Android Auto, following its recent availability on Apple CarPlay. However, it is important to note that work accounts are not supported on Android Auto, which may limit its use for business users.
Rollout Details for Android Auto
As reported by Android Authority, the rollout has commenced for certain users, with many sharing screenshots that reveal a pop-up notification for Android Auto support within the Meet application. This notification informs users about the capability to check their schedules and join meetings straight from their vehicle’s display.
Features Available on Android Auto
The integration allows users to see their scheduled meetings and join calls through the car’s interface. The application emphasizes that users can join quickly, helping them to remain focused on driving. Users are encouraged to connect their devices to their vehicles and select the Meet app on Android Auto to experience this feature.
Call Management on Android Auto
Google’s support documentation clarifies that calls on Android Auto bypass the pre-call screen and deactivate video during calls. A Scheduled tab is available, displaying meetings from the user’s calendar and enabling users to join these calls. While users have the option to mute their microphones, certain features such as Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are disabled for safety reasons. Only basic call information and controls are visible during use; presentations and other participants are not displayed, and the phone transitions to a simplified, on-the-go mode automatically.
Limitations for Work Accounts
Significantly, Google has confirmed that work profile accounts cannot be used with Meet on Android Auto. Although active calls will still show on the display, upcoming meetings and call history will not be visible. Google has stated that work profile accounts aren’t supported in Meet on Android Auto, indicating that while active calls are displayed, details regarding future meetings and call logs will not be accessible.
Expectations for Google Meet on CarPlay
With Google Meet now available on Apple CarPlay, it was anticipated that this feature would roll out to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and even users with personal Google accounts. However, the limitation on work accounts is not specified for the CarPlay application, making its presence on Android Auto particularly significant, given that work accounts are likely to be the primary users of such features while on the road.
Future Availability
The Google Meet application for Android Auto is projected to become more widely accessible in the near future.
