AI Overviews have been significantly improved by Google, enhancing the summarisation feature in Search. The upgrade will integrate insights from social media interactions and online discussions, providing users with a more contextual understanding. Moving forward, AI Overviews will incorporate quotes from individuals regarding their experiences found on platforms like Reddit and similar communities.
AI Overviews Expertise
As detailed in a recent post on Google’s blog, social media links will be highlighted under categories such as “Expert Advice” or “Community Perspectives,” which will vary based on the specific user query. It is important to note that not every inquiry will automatically receive the “Expert Advice” label.
Furthermore, Google will enhance the user experience by providing additional information when users hover over links. For social media entries, the display will include the creator’s name or the community, while links from websites will show the title of the site or page.
According to Google, there is a growing trend for users to seek advice from various individuals searching online. To assist users in discovering insightful content, AI responses will now present previews from public discussions, social media, and other original sources.
The company also emphasises that this enhancement will increase visibility in AI Search, enabling users to connect directly with relevant creators and sources.
Concerns Surrounding AI Hallucinations
While this update aims to provide users with a wider range of perspectives on certain topics, there remain significant concerns surrounding AI hallucinations. Initially, AI Overviews faced substantial scrutiny due to the delivery of misleading and erroneous information.
In earlier stages, the tool struggled with understanding nuances such as sarcasm, even referencing satirical sites like The Onion, which suggested consuming “one small rock per day.” It also cited Reddit threads that absurdly advised adding glue to pizza to help cheese adhere better. However, improvements have been noted over the years, reducing the likelihood of such inaccuracies.
Though incorporating social media viewpoints into AI Overviews could present risks concerning misinformation and dubious sources, Google seems eager to position this feature as a means to furnish users with a richer context and a variety of viewpoints.
