IBM’s Commitment to Digital Skills in India

IBM has made a significant promise to equip five million individuals throughout India with essential digital skills by the end of this decade. This initiative is centred around rapidly growing fields, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and quantum computing, aimed at preparing the workforce for a changing economic environment.

IBM SkillsBuild: A Free Educational Platform

The programme will be rolled out using IBM SkillsBuild, a no-cost educational resource offering access to over 1,000 courses for both learners and educators. This initiative is part of the company’s broader goal to skill 30 million individuals globally by the year 2030.

Democratising Access to Technology

This commitment is geared towards making advanced technology accessible, moving beyond mere digital literacy to foster substantial expertise in emerging technologies. By concentrating on areas such as AI, quantum computing, and cybersecurity, the initiative ensures that both students and adult learners are prepared for future employment opportunities.

IBM’s Chairman, President, and CEO, Arvind Krishna, remarked that India has the potential and aspiration to excel in AI and quantum fields. He stated that mastery of cutting-edge technologies will determine economic competitiveness, scientific advancement, and societal change. The company’s investment in educating five million people signifies a commitment to this vision. By enhancing access to advanced skills, opportunities for innovation and growth in India are being fostered.

Expanding Educational Presence

To realise this significant aim, IBM intends to strengthen its involvement across various levels of the Indian educational framework, which includes schools, universities, and vocational centres. A vital part of this plan is the collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Collaboration with Educational Institutions

This partnership will focus on integrating specialised coursework into current curriculums, organising hackathons, and providing internships. By engaging directly with these educational bodies, the programme seeks to create practical learning experiences that connect academic knowledge with industry needs.

Training the Trainers

A major emphasis of the initiative is on “training the trainers.” IBM is participating in the co-development of AI curricula tailored specifically for senior secondary education and is also concentrating on empowering faculty through specialised programmes. This ensures that educators acquire the skills and confidence necessary to impart complex technical knowledge effectively.
