Artificial Intelligence Centre at IIT Kharagpur
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has launched a remarkable venture focused on utilising artificial intelligence in geological and mining systems as part of its ambition to enhance data-driven transformation in the industry.
Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI in Mining
The Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-enabled Geological and Mining Systems has been founded with a financial pledge of Rs 15 crore over five years from Vikram Sodhi, who serves as Vice Chairman of Mineros SA and Managing Partner at Sun Valley Investments.
Interdisciplinary Research Initiative
Designed as an interdisciplinary research initiative, the centre aspires to create artificial intelligence solutions that are specifically suited to India’s geological conditions while simultaneously tackling enduring challenges facing the mining ecosystem.
Digital Technologies and Their Limitations
According to the institute, although digital technologies have been embraced in various segments of the mining value chain, their sporadic implementation has impeded significant large-scale impact. The new centre is intended to develop integrated, mining-specific AI systems that can bolster exploration, mine planning, operations, safety, and environmental management within a cohesive framework.
Comprehensive Mining Lifecycle Research
Research conducted at this facility will encompass the entire mining lifecycle, consolidating fields such as exploration, mineral processing, predictive maintenance, and ESG analytics into a unified intelligence layer.
Industry-Linked Grand Challenges Programme
A pivotal aspect of this initiative includes an industry-linked “grand challenges” programme. This will utilise real-world datasets provided by industry collaborators to develop and validate solutions within operational settings.
Significance of the New Centre
The establishment of the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence is viewed as a vital enhancement of IIT-Kharagpur’s interdisciplinary research environment. Director Prof Suman Chakraborty mentioned that by merging geological sciences, mining engineering, and artificial intelligence, the centre is strategically positioned to tackle intricate national issues through innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
