Instagram app for iPad users is making strides as Meta works on its long-awaited native application. After over a decade of requests from dedicated users, reports have emerged indicating that the app is actively being developed and is currently undergoing internal testing with Meta employees. If everything proceeds smoothly, the anticipated release could happen later this year.

This exciting news was initially shared in April by Kaya Yurieff and Kalley Huang from The Information. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has since confirmed the information in his latest Power On newsletter. Gurman highlights that Meta employees are “actively testing” the iPad version on-site, with a public launch expected before the end of 2025, unless there are unexpected setbacks.

Presently, Instagram users on iPads can only access the web version or the iPhone app, which is merely adapted for the larger display. This has prompted significant criticism as the existing setup does not leverage the iPad’s screen size or multitasking capabilities effectively. The forthcoming app is anticipated to provide a more refined and user-friendly interface, optimised for browsing and editing photos and videos on an expansive canvas.

Meta’s Cautious Approach to iPad Apps

Meta’s strategy regarding iPad applications has traditionally been conservative. Although the company launched a Facebook app for iPads back in 2011, it has generally avoided developing tailored versions of its significant platforms for tablets. However, it seems this strategy is evolving. Just last week, Meta unveiled an official WhatsApp app specifically optimised for iPads, and now Instagram appears to be next in line.

Reasons Behind the Delay

Gurman noted that one factor contributing to the hold-up was the concern regarding how square or low-resolution images would appear on larger screens. Nevertheless, with advancements in display technology and enhanced app optimisation, Meta seems prepared to advance.

While there is still no confirmation regarding the potential release of Meta’s Threads app for the iPad, the creation of a native Instagram experience signifies considerable progress, especially for users who relish content creation, browsing, and editing on larger displays.
