Instagram, a social media platform owned by Meta, has launched an innovative photo-sharing option called Instagram Instants. This feature allows users to share genuine and casual moments with their closest friends. Notably, the photos shared through this feature vanish after being viewed, but they can be saved in an archive for approximately a year. Users also have the option to resharing these moments as a recap on their Stories.
What Instagram Instants Offers
Instagram is marketing this feature as a more natural and unrefined method to showcase moments, in contrast to the highly edited content typically seen on the platform. Users also have the ability to respond or react to an Instant. The feature can be accessed within the Instagram app, located in the lower right corner of the inbox. Additionally, a separate app has been introduced to provide quick access to the camera for capturing moments, although this app is currently available only in selected regions.
Accessing Instagram Instants
To access Instagram Instants, users can find it within their Instagram inbox, represented as a mini stack of photos in the bottom right corner. Each Instant is displayed in a smaller square frame and is visible in its original form, lacking any editing or filters, which distinguishes it from the standard full-screen media formats on Instagram.
Privacy and Sharing Options
Users can select their sharing preferences, choosing between their Close Friends and followers. In return, friends can react, reply, and share their own Instants. As highlighted previously, all shared Instants are automatically saved in an ‘archive’ after the 24-hour viewing window. This archived content is accessible only to the user, not their followers, and may be shared as recaps at a later time.
Removing Instagram Instants from DMs
Instagram allows users to temporarily hide the stack of mini photos from their direct messages by using a long-press and right swipe gesture. In select countries, including India, Instagram Instants comes with a dedicated app that enables users to quickly access their camera for instant sharing of their captures.
Safety Features of Instagram Instants
Instagram Instants incorporates similar privacy and safety features as the primary Instagram app, offering controls such as blocking, muting, and restricting users. It also includes provisions for parental supervision on accounts belonging to teenagers.
