Instagram Redesign: Enhancing Video Experience with Reels

Instagram is set to transform the user experience significantly as it tests a new design that places greater emphasis on Reels, its short-form video feature. Users in India will notice that the app now opens directly onto the Reels video feed, marking a considerable departure from the long-standing photo grid that has characterised the platform.

New Features for an Enhanced User Experience

This beta test forms part of a wider initiative to align the app with current usage trends. Users participating in this trial will also discover a new “Following” tab, which includes a “Latest” filter. This feature is designed to allow users to view posts from their followed accounts in chronological order, a request many have voiced since its previous removal. Additional filters will be available in this tab, including an “All” feed featuring recommended content and a “Friends” feed showcasing mutual followers.

A Response to Evolving User Behavior

These adjustments are in direct response to a noticeable evolution in user behaviour, as detailed by Instagram’s parent company, Meta. The company noted that messaging has become the predominant method for sharing photos and videos on the platform, with Reels being reshared over 4.5 billion times each day across various Meta platforms. The focus on Reels aims to facilitate greater engagement with content, whether users are seeking entertainment or staying connected with friends.

Global Navigation Enhancements

While the Reels-first layout is currently exclusive to users in India, there are plans for a redesigned navigation bar for all users worldwide. Upcoming updates will relocate the direct messages (DMs) icon to the centre of the bottom navigation bar for easier access, highlighting its significance for users. The Reels feature will occupy the second tab in this new layout. The company has expressed that this change will enable users to navigate seamlessly between their main tabs.

Ultimately, this redesign is aimed at streamlining access to the app’s most utilised features: video content and private messaging.
