Instagram Launches Global Awards Programme for Creators
Instagram has unveiled a new global awards programme aimed at recognising 25 creators who have significantly influenced culture and pushed creative boundaries. The recipients, set to be announced next week, will be awarded a custom gold ring symbolising their accomplishments.
Judging Panel for the Awards
The selection committee for this inaugural programme features an array of prominent figures from diverse sectors. Key members include Instagram head Adam Mosseri, filmmaker Spike Lee, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, actress Yara Shahidi, and makeup artist Pat McGrath, among others.
Unique Awards for Winners
Each winner will not only receive a bespoke ring designed by British fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner but also a digital golden ring surrounding their Instagram profile. They will be given the opportunity to create a personalised “Like” button that will appear when others interact with their posts. However, the award does not carry a monetary prize.
Context of the Awards Initiative
This launch comes at a crucial time, as Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has been reducing its creator payment initiatives. Earlier this year, Meta terminated a programme that compensated creators for ad placements on their profiles. In 2023, the company phased out bonuses for Reels creators on both Instagram and Facebook, and discontinued its affiliate marketing bonuses the previous year.
Challenges in the Creator Economy
The changing landscape reflects larger issues within the creator economy. According to a survey conducted by Kajabi in 2024, brand deals for creators have decreased by 52 percent. Additionally, a Bank of America report highlights that sponsorships and paid partnerships are becoming increasingly dominated by top-tier creators.
Focus on Recognition Over Revenue
In response to these challenges, Instagram’s new initiative shifts the emphasis towards recognition rather than financial rewards. The company has described the awards as honouring creators who boldly take creative risks and remain true to their vision, bringing communities together through their artistic expressions.
Comparative Significance of the Programme
Instagram has compared this initiative to the Oscars for content creators, albeit without a live awards ceremony. The winners are scheduled to be revealed on 16 October.
