Flipkart Black: Premium Subscription Service in India
E-commerce platform Flipkart has launched a new premium subscription service called Flipkart Black, specifically designed to enhance users’ experiences with shopping, travel, and entertainment perks. This service directly competes with Amazon Prime and takes the place of Flipkart VIP, the previous premium offering.
Pricing and Membership Details
Priced at ₹1,499 per year, Flipkart Black is available at a special introductory rate of ₹990 until the end of this month. Membership lasts for 365 days from the date of activation and can be renewed on an annual basis.
Key Features of Flipkart Black
A standout feature is the complimentary one-year subscription to YouTube Premium, which offers advantages such as ad-free video streaming, offline downloads, background play, and access to YouTube Music. This benefit remains valid only during the membership and is linked to a single YouTube account.
Exclusive Benefits Include:
- Special Flipkart Black Deals on premium appliances and gadgets
- ₹1 rescheduling and cancellation on bookings via Cleartrip and Flipkart Travel
- 5% SuperCoins cashback on all transactions (up to ₹100 per purchase)
- An additional 5% discount on orders (up to ₹1,000) when using SuperCoins
- Early access to major shopping events along with 15% instant bank offers during these sales
- 24×7 priority customer support with reduced wait times
- Personalised lifestyle and entertainment offers curated by Flipkart
Target Audience
The company mentioned that Flipkart Black is aimed at “digitally native” customers who appreciate personalisation, premium experiences, and immediate access to services.
Comparison with Flipkart Plus
Flipkart Black complements the existing free loyalty programme, Flipkart Plus, which provides rewards such as additional SuperCoins cashback. In contrast to Plus, Flipkart Black incurs a fee and extends benefits beyond just shopping, incorporating travel and entertainment options.
Strategic Goals
Rahat Patel, Vice President at Flipkart, indicated that the initial round of benefits is centred on shopping, entertainment, and travel, with plans for future expansions. By replacing Flipkart VIP, which was priced at ₹799 annually but lacked many new features, the company aims to draw more users into its premium ecosystem and reinforce its competitive stance in India’s subscription landscape.
