Micro dramas are redefining consumption of entertainment in today’s digital landscape. With the rise of short-form videos on platforms like Instagram reels and YouTube Shorts, this innovative genre has captivated audiences. Surprisingly, micro dramas, consisting of brief episodic narratives tailored for smartphones, are emerging as a significant content format. A recent Meta-Ormax report indicates this format is gaining remarkable popularity.

Insights from the “Micro Dramas: The India Story” Report

The report, presented at Meta’s first-ever Meta Marketing Summit: Micro-Drama Edition in Bengaluru on March 17, highlights the growing importance of micro dramas in content consumption. Developed in partnership with Ormax Media, the study explores the evolving habits of viewers.

Changing Viewing Habits

The findings suggest that individuals are dedicating approximately 3.5 hours weekly, or around 30 minutes daily, to watching micro dramas. This shift in viewing habits signifies an increasing demand for quick, engaging content.

Industry Insights

Shweta Bajpai, Director of Media & Entertainment (India) at Meta, stated that micro drama is not just a fleeting trend. The format is altering the very foundation of Indian entertainment. In less than a year, a new category of platforms has emerged, cultivating audience habits and developing business models that are expanding rapidly.

AI-Generated Content and Audience Preferences

Amidst this trend, audiences are also showing an affinity for AI-generated short-form content; nearly 47% regard AI micro dramas as creative and distinctive. Conversely, around 38% still prefer the familiarity of real actors in their viewing experience.

Engagement and Personal Viewing

Targeted primarily at mobile users, micro dramas allow for rapid engagement with stories throughout the day. The format is notably personal, with around 90% of the viewing occurring solo. Current leading genres among viewers include romance, family drama, and comedy, showcasing varied interests during individual viewing sessions.

Research Methodology

The report is based on 50 comprehensive interviews alongside 2,000 personal interviews with micro-drama audiences aged 18 to 44 across 14 states. The study was executed between November 2025 and January 2026.
