Google DeepMind has welcomed data scientist Jasjeet Sekhon as the new Chief Strategy Officer (CSO). In this role, he will oversee the company’s research initiatives, commercialisation strategies, policy-making, and more. The announcement was made by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis in a LinkedIn post on March 18.

Jasjeet Sekhon’s Transition to DeepMind

Sekhon is stepping down from his position as chief scientist and head of AI at Bridgewater Associates. However, he will continue to be involved with Bridgewater as a member of its board of directors, as noted in Hassabis’s post.

Hassabis expressed his enthusiasm about Sekhon’s appointment, stating that he is exceptionally qualified for this role given his extensive experience at Bridgewater Associates. He mentioned his excitement to collaborate with Sekhon to advance significant work during a pivotal time for technology.

Since 2018, Sekhon has been instrumental in establishing Bridgewater’s AIA Labs, an AI research and investment initiative directed by Co-CIO Greg Jensen. Prior to his time at Bridgewater, he served as a data science professor at Yale University and held positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University.

This significant executive appointment occurs amid the increasing competition for leadership in the AI sector. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have recently made strides in the AI market, offering powerful enterprise tools and capabilities.
