Mark Zuckerberg Sues Meta Over Account Suspension
An attorney from America who shares a name with the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, has initiated legal action against the tech corporation, alleging that Facebook consistently suspended his account under the guise of impersonation.
Mark S Zuckerberg, a bankruptcy lawyer from Indiana with nearly four decades of experience, reported that his account faced suspension five times in the last eight years. Each instance resulted from claims that he was masquerading as another individual, even after he had provided various forms of identification, such as his photo ID and credit cards.
Legal Action Against Meta
According to the lawsuit lodged in Marion Superior Court, Meta not only barred access to his personal and professional accounts but also took down advertisements that amounted to approximately $11,000, causing notable financial setbacks. He remarked to the local news outlet WTHR-TV that the situation is akin to purchasing a billboard and then finding it obscured, depriving him of the benefits for which he paid.
Continued Suspensions and Appeals
The most recent suspension transpired in May this year, rendering his business page inactive for several months. Zuckerberg has mentioned that he adhered to all appeal processes established by Meta but seldom received a prompt reply. He noted that after filing an appeal the day following a suspension, he had heard nothing for four months. Furthermore, he indicated that in previous occurrences, it took over six months for his account to be reactivated.
Meta’s Response and Acknowledgment of Error
Following the lawsuit, Meta admitted to the mistake, reinstating his account. The company acknowledged that his account had been “disabled in error” and stated that efforts are underway to avoid similar issues in the future.
However, the lawyer maintains that these suspensions have inflicted genuine financial and reputational damage. He expressed his disbelief at the inability of a major tech company to prevent such errors, questioning their competence in the matter.
Documenting Past Incidents
To underscore the peculiar mishaps, he has established a website detailing previous incidents, one of which involved him being incorrectly sued by the state of Washington. His legal claim is aimed at ensuring the permanent reinstatement of his account, reimbursement for lost advertising expenses, legal fees, and compensation for the disruption caused to his business.
