The Premier League has formed a strategic five-year partnership with Microsoft to change how football is experienced by fans globally. As part of this collaboration, Microsoft takes on the role of the official cloud and AI partner for the League, leveraging advanced technologies to modernise digital infrastructure, match insights, and internal operations.
Collaboration Focus Areas
Announced on Tuesday, this partnership sees Microsoft assisting the League in four primary domains: fan engagement, match insights and analysis, cloud transformation, and organisational productivity. By integrating Microsoft’s AI and cloud services, such as Azure OpenAI, Copilot, and Dynamics 365, the Premier League aims to provide an enhanced and immersive experience for its extensive fanbase of over 1.8 billion people across 189 nations.
Expanding on Previous Partnerships
This new agreement builds on the Premier League’s earlier collaboration with Oracle, which focused on delivering up-to-the-minute match statistics and analytics during live broadcasts. In contrast, the Microsoft partnership expands significantly, introducing AI-driven personalisation, natural language interaction, and comprehensive cloud migration across both fan-facing and internal platforms.
A More Intelligent and Interactive Experience for Fans
At the heart of this collaboration is the Premier League Companion, a newly introduced AI-powered digital assistant accessible via the League’s mobile app and website. Built on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI technology, the Companion enables fans to ask custom questions and receive insights derived from over 30 seasons of historical data, 300,000 articles, and 9,000 videos.
Tailored Insights and Real-Time Support
Fans can effortlessly access tailored content in real-time, whether they are looking for player statistics, exploring team rivalries, or reviewing match histories. The tool is set to evolve over the season, eventually supporting open-text queries in native languages, audio translations, and real-time guidance for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players. The AI assistant will function as a virtual manager, assisting users in making strategic choices for their fantasy teams.
Enhancements for Live Matches
Moreover, Microsoft’s technologies will significantly improve the live match experience with real-time data overlays and in-broadcast insights, allowing fans to gain a deeper understanding of on-field action as it unfolds. Archived footage and post-match analyses will become more accessible and engaging, providing context that goes beyond standard highlights.
Modernising Internal Operations
Alongside enhancing fan interaction, Microsoft will assist the League in migrating its core technology infrastructure to Azure, enabling improved scalability and integration of AI-driven tools. Internal operations will also be updated through Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, and the Power Platform, which will streamline workflows and promote data-informed decision-making across various departments.
